What Exactly is Google's PageRank?

Google's PageRank, or PR, is a numerical value showing the importance of your web site on the internet. PageRank is calculated by Google and is part of the equation that determines how high your web site will rank in the search engine results.

How is PageRank determined?

PageRank is determined by the number of inbound links to your web site. Google looks at inbound links as a way of "voting" for a web site. It's easy to see why. If one were to have a highly informative article on their web site, it would make sense that there would be many other web sites that link to the article. Google would then look at these links and give the web site in question a higher PR because it has obviously has informative content.

Not all inbound links are counted by Google. Each site that links to yours has a Page Rank which is used to decide how much that "vote" counts for. Some inbound links, especially from web sites with low PR, may not even be counted at all. Others, from link farms or sketchy web sites, may result in a penalty. This penalty will bring down your PR. For a link to count as a vote, the web site hosting the link must be trustworthy and not a link farm! Some of the best inbound links come from human edited directories, such as DMOZ.org, Yahoo! Directory, and Business.com.

How Do I Know My Web Sites PageRank?

It is easy to find an approximation of your web sites' PR. If you don't already have the Google Toolbar installed, you will need to install it. There is a green bar on the Google Toolbar that shows an approximation of the PR for the site you are currently visiting. When you place your mouse over the green bar, it will show an approximate PR number. The PR scale goes from 0-10, with 0 being the worst and 10 the best.

However, the Google Toolbar only shows an approximation of your PR and may not be entirely accurate. The toolbar will report PR's for sites that aren't listed in Google.Thus, it should not be used as a deciding factor when looking for links. If you find a site with a high PR and you would like to exchange links with them, it is important to first make sure that they are indexed by Google. If they do not show up in the Google search results, the PR is probably not as high as you would expect or does not exist at all.
